*“that kid was in so much pain before. your mom and i were convinced we were gonna just find him dead one day in his room. and what he has done has made him happy again and it’s made him want to live again. and i don’t know why that is so hard for some people to understand. because it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone… but sam. that was sam. it’s that fucking simple.”

while the film style isn’t my personal taste and i don’t think i would rewatch it, this is still a very beautiful movie and elliot page is (per usual) brilliant. i love that it shows the complexities of being trans without making everyone in sam’s life completely hateful. most of them care about him so much but realistically slip up and you don’t know how to remind them without making them feel bad. then there are people who instead of outright saying how they feel, they’ll purposely make you feel uncomfortable and practically mock you with jabs that are subtle enough that you look crazy enough if you take offence. people then expecting you to ignore the little things people do that make you feel completely and utterly dehumanised and unwelcome, not to correct them or call them out because it’s just “too much” and they feel like they have to follow orders when all you’re asking is to be respected as the human being you are just like they would any other person they meet.
