definitely one of my biggest problematic comfort movies, julia roberts is amazing.
i love julia roberts, her performance in erin brockovich is honestly still living rent free in my mind. with this and the prior one are clearly weaker in comparison, she still manages to be the best part of each film. she’s honestly the glue to this movie that keeps it from falling apart, and the biggest reason why i want to root for this 90s romcom. she portrays vivian as an extremely charismatic woman, and i love how it almost humanises sex work. it delivers on the typical feel-good, glossy cinderella story where the leading protagonists live happily ever after. this movie is honestly totally culturally significant, it’s filled with memorable, iconic scenes for its entirety. the two lead performers chemistry is spot on, even electric, creating a true effective romance. the fashion is perfect, and the soundtrack is even better. my biggest problems it that it completely romanticises prostitution, failing to portray true realties of sex workers, making it seem unrealistic or even dated. it is a true disney story, going for a positive, formulaic plot that seems superficial, instead of opting for the true grittiness that street life brings. i totally get why everyone loves this, as even i do to a certain degree, but it just feels like a polished cinderella esque story where a man saves a woman randomly and they live happily ever after. i was tempted to give it a higher score, but feel like it misses the mark in certain areas and fails to reach true perfection or greatness.
