As Delia Konzett points out in Hollywood’s Hawaii, there’s an immense amount of baggage with this film 1) It’s a bastardized version of the book that sanitized the army’s image to ensure cooperation, I HAVENT READ THE OG BOOK, but Konzett makes it out to be much grimier and more interesting 2) It’s extremely whitewashed 3) and debatably most importantly, it normalized our colonial and military presence in Hawaii. The military industrial complex coexisting with the tourism industry until Uncle Sam says “go time”
In spite of its flaws, I really enjoyed the movie, our Cool-Hand Luke type protagonist keeping his drunken best friend out of trouble was really entertaining, keeping the drunk bff out of trouble overseas is an experience my fellow vets know all too well.
I think that’s exactly Konzetts point, you see that, you go “haha relatable” while ignoring the point that the experience should not be normal, the colonization that leads to me so closely identifying my experience in Japan with Prews experience in Honolulu should not be.
Hollywoods Hawaii by Delia Konzett, I’m reading it for a class, some pretty good stuff in there.
AND IF YOU THINK THAT KISS WASNT IMPORTANT TO THE STORY, YOURE SMOKING METH. THE KISS ITSELF WAS A MERE BEAUTIFUL IMAGE IN A MUCH MORE IMPORTANT SCENE!!!!!!
