Been thinking about this quite a bit since I watched it last night. The one word that keeps ringing in my head is enigmatic. There’s an austere and majestic tint to everything. The “true” reality is often left uncertain. I think the initial “Cut!” from the director sows doubt throughout the rest of the picture, maybe even adding a meta layer of cinematic investigation.
Marion Cotillard commands an unbreakable icy eminence. The film can feel punishingly withholding. The cold and deafening silence is so devouringly empty, almost flirting with a tonally consuming vaccuum of something like Under the Skin.
I think this one might have a creeping staying power.
