"my life is not as necessary as your death.”
BLOWN AWAY!!! these performances of srk and queen mother madhuri dixit are literally top of the line yet somehow it keeps getting better! first off, i’ve never seen so much ACTING in one of these before, like my girl is off the charts here. shivani’s transformation from a simple girl to a housewife, from a falsely convicted murderer then to a serial revenge artist is masterfully done, i couldn’t look away from her, no matter how uncomfortable the sequence was. she truly stole the show here. and srk, as ive mentioned before is quite the legend himself, but in the world of 90s bollywood dominated by loverboys and romeos (as he would come to be), his roots as a villain prove strong here!! he’s crazy, calculated, uncaring, relentless, and ANNOYING AS FUCKKKK!!! it’s like you couldn’t catch a break from him, let her have this moment omggg.
in all honesty, it’s a crime that the oscars don’t pay attention to foreign films often. this film, quirky and oddballish, meant to display the double standards indian women face, and show the damage that a patriarchal society can do, all the while, under the guise of another cheesy romcom with two big stars under its belt, hits hard in every way. it’s so well written and directed, i’m quite the sucker when a film takes all those little insignificant things, like the idea of becoming an aide for the disabled then being flipped on its head completely, and brings them all together satisfactorily. the prison scenes were a fave. and the music is quite catchy, no matter about kali maa erupting inside you or thievery in a chickpea field. when negative forces make you lose everything, and even almost lose yourself, what can you do other than counteract those forces with stronger ones?
