I can respect a movie on a budget when there’s effort both on the script and through the lens. And “New Life” gives a valiant effort. Yes, it has moments of either over explaining matters or under developing certain characters. I will say Sonya Walger is excellent as Elsa, with her character given an interesting trait to make things a bit spicier. I do enjoy that it’s a fast paced outbreak story. I can’t say more than that. Its runtime of 84 minutes provides not enough space to provide more legs to the story, and also coming out after 2020 and reminding viewers of that period doesn’t do any favors. Think “Contagion” meets “The Last of Us” and it’s a serviceable low-budget indie movie. And I respect it. It just doesn’t have enough juice to hang with the big dogs.
