A rather bittersweet watch, as yesterday I said goodbye to my best friend, our family dog of 12 years. It’s difficult to put into words the amount of joy she brought me and my family during her time here. But it got to a point where it was selfish to keep her struggling, so we decided it was finally time. I’m absolutely heartbroken, but I know God has a special place for her.
But about the film, Don Bluth’s All Dogs Go to Heaven is an emotional watch. In my personal opinion, dogs are the best pets you can ask for. There’s a reason why they’re called “a man’s best friend”. This film follows Charlie (Burt Reynolds), a dog who was ran over and sent to heaven. When he finds a way back to Earth, he meets a little girl named Anne-Marie (Judith Barsi), who can communicate with dogs. Anne-Marie is an orphan, and when her and Charlie becomes best friends, they both start to understand the meaning and the importance of friendship.
While doing some research for this film, I found out something about Anne-Marie’s voice actor, Judith Barsi, which is absolutely tragic. Two years before the release of this film, after she finished recording her lines, her father was mentally unstable and ended up murdering her, her mother and himself in a murder-suicide. Knowing the tragic death of Barsi makes the idea of her character being an orphan all the more heartbreaking.
All Dogs Go to Heaven is a beautiful and emotional watch, but it was definitely a film I needed at this point, missing my own best friend.
