Coolie
Coolie is an example of what happens when hero-worship takes the place of storytelling or entertaining cinema. Here we have Deva (Rajnikanth), a labour leader, who infiltrates a gang headed by Simon (Nagarjuna Akkineni), to fill the holes of his inventor friend's (Sathyaraj) mysterious death.

If you are looking for a mass action film, Coolie has you covered. Rajnikanth is effortless as the hero with a swagger, and the editing, songs and even the score are on point. I would be lying if I didn't admit that the Monica song is actually insanely catchy, no matter how averse I might be to song numbers that come out of nowhere, and I would also agree that the film does have one exceptionally shot fight sequence.

Yet, the film has a host of issues. First, the revelations in the film just keep on piling up, with most making no sense and one insane one, which does not affect the plot whatsoever. It feels as if the writers were making it up as they went. Shruti Hassan, who plays the role of the dead friend's daughter, Preeti, is someone who has no agency whatsoever in most of the film. Her role is reduced to that of a damsel in distress and feels outdated, even when it comes to mass commercial masala films.

This should have actually been part of the LCU rather than Leo.Except for the action and Upendra, nothing was good.
