"when we close our eyes, of course, we see darkness. but if we stare at this darkness long enough, we will see something. the image comes from within, from the mind.”
the way Apichatpong Weerasethakul is able to meld existential spirituality with supernatural metaphors and surrealist imagery is fucking wild dude. i was introduced to his works via ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ which blew me away to the point where i see it as one of the greatest films i have ever seen, and this film resides in a similar echelon, although i did not enjoy it quite as much as the aforementioned film, its still perfection through and through.
the manor in which Apichatpong explores human nature, relationships, the past, the future, faith, regret, and how all of those things shape the entirety of our beings is i want to say second to none, and when paired with his signature style of cinematography, its a match made in heaven, its beyond beautiful, it speaks to the viewer in a way that transcends film and entertainment. this film in particular is so dreamily hypnotic and emotionally jam packed, every scene is chalked full of analogy and deeper meaning, almost every line of dialogue is calculated with deafening intention and intense philosophy, every image is carrying the weight of a thousand suns, it’s unbelievable how seamless and pure this script and movie is. its just such a wild and surreal viewing experience, once again im blown away.
