I'm so impressed that this still manages to be an incredibly engaging and downright unsettling piece of sci-fi filmmaking all these years later. The way that the mystery continues to build feels so precise in what is and isn't shown directly to the audience, and you truly get the feeling that the events we see is just one small puzzle piece in a grander picture. The likeable protagonist keeps the film grounded and interesting throughout this fairly straightforward story, and it's those implications that the film leaves you with that brings forth the true lingering terror.

intentionally chosen as a pseudo- double feature with the thing from another world in part to prove a hypothesis: that i would consider them good, but probably way better if their near-perfect remakes didn't exist. i was right! the paranoia in broad daylight and creeping exhaustion that I adore in my preferred 1978 version are readily intact here. you can tell that this film was a victim of studio meddling, though: chop off the bookends and you have something really special
