Honestly, I was really surprised by how good ‘Watchmen Chapter 1’ turned out to be. It’s not perfect, but it definitely exceeded what I thought it would be. ‘Watchmaker’ is my favorite chapter of the book, and even though it has its issues, I thought they did a great job adapting that chapter. The visuals and music are awesome! Also I really enjoyed how they showed Dr. Manhattan’s perspective of time and how he sees people and the world. All of his scenes were quite artistic, the scenes where he talks about his past, what brought him to where he is now, and how he's creating a new world on Mars. THAT WAS AMAZING!! and a really cool way to bring the graphic novel to life on screen.
Another aspect I appreciated about this film is that it truly seems as if the creators have a deep understanding and genuine care for both the characters and the story. I enjoyed the fresh takes on particular scenes and the subtle additions. For instance, when Rorschach is talking with Adrian, and a flash of lightning casts his shadow onto the Ozymandias poster, I found that to be a clever shot. Another moment that stood out to me was during the scene where Rorschach and Dan are speaking in the workshop; Rorschach is facing the old Nite Owl costume while they chat, which gives the impression that he’s still stuck in the past and talking with the former Dan. It’s just those cool little touches that add depth to the story and present an intriguing interpretation of the characters.
Overall, I really liked this animated movie! Sure, it's not perfect and it has some issues that I could point out, but so many people are bashing it that I hardly see anyone talking about the good stuff. Personally, I thought the first chapter was great; it does a fantastic job of introducing this world.
