i thought this movie was decent pretty much the whole way through, but honestly the emotional punches didn’t really land — there are a few major plot points which are sharp left turns, and the “main character who doesnt process his emotions verbally but is himself a good therapist to others” is a difficult trope for a heartwarming movie, even if it is how the guy running the theater program at the mens prison block would work. honestly, I think it’s that by the time the first negative event occurs i simply haven’t fallen in love with divine g as a person. the movie doesn’t really have any exposition, and as a result you just kind of enter and see this guy whos kind of a control freak over what appears to be a very healthy theater program at a prison
then at the end they reveal it’s a true story and pretty much all of the actors are the ACTUAL people behind the events in the movie (i did not know this going in, not sure if others did), and my first thought was — what?? how was this not a WAY better movie?? you had all of the tools possible to make a banger prison redemption story, how did this not slap?
it’s of course unfair for me to be thinking “that certainly was no shawshank redemption”, but honestly — is it? i guess i’d have prefered a few more creative liberties in the storytelling in order to pack a more heartstring-tugging punch. or maybe it’s the lack of exposition. or maybe it’s the relatively poor acting (although i didnt notice they weren’t hollywood actors until the very end). or maybe it’s the pacing — slow at times, abrupt at others
not sure, but damn this concept had a high ceiling and i feel like it kinda rode the floor
