Hiroshi Shimizu might be the most underrated director. I first found his films on Plex and honestly…haven’t seen a bad film yet. Hopefully more people will check out his films because for Japanese films from the 30 and 40s these are incredible!

a slow burn of a movie. a beautiful depiction of the tender beginnings of new love, of wanting to find meaning in life.

also a pretty funny depiction of a bunch of dudes snoring loudly in one room. also, of some very dubious walking lessons?? did he ever know how to use his leg or did the pin sever a nerve or something?

I watched this only because that cover art is a vibe, but ended up interested in Hiroshi Shimizu in general. “Ornamental Hairpin” is an idyll about a group of people at a resort who hang out with each other and don’t even necessarily get along that much, but after they all leave they are going to look back and think “wasn’t that a good time?” That’s what this movie is about. What a lovely film.
