Surprisingly restrained (for these types of old b sci-fi movies anyways), Journey to the Center of the Earth really feels like an ode to spelunking more than anything else, instead of indulging in its ridiculous premise it instead concerns itself with the rigorous logistical methods by which an expedition of this magnitude would require. I do hope animal endangerment on set was kept to the minimum of what you would expect for a project of its time.
