History repeats itself as we all like to say and maybe thats true or maybe we just see patterns in things from a certain lens but either way what Transgender Nuclear Suicide Sojourner hauntingly captures is the ease in which we can be misinformed, how easy it is for lies to become fact because of convenience and beliefs, so much so that the film itself is scared of how it is communicating its ideas to us if it is indeed doing it correctly or rightly and i really relate to that as a filmmaker myself and I can't envy the enormous responsibility tangling something like this must have been for director Mel Turnage but with direct simplicity there's a confrontational quality to this piece that let its messaging breathe and slowly come alive over the course of 17 minutes.
In the film we inhabit several wastelands, one of the past (the stock footage of nuclear bomb tasting and misguided warning videos), of the present (the news reporting and right wing bullshit about transgender rights) and finally maybe of the future in which our heroine contemplates the bleak reality in which we live in currently against a backdrop that you could easily imagine is some sort of nuclear wasteland but as the film itself states this parallel is not perfect and serves as just a blueprint for us to see that really how the media spreads apathic lies and misinformation hasn't changed significantly besides how common everyday folks with radical beliefs now holds the same power to share whatever they want to as much as the government used to have, the most upsetting part is that more people are dying because of it and thats why films like this one are important and needs support. I don't just think this has urgent things to say and express but generally Transgender Nuclear Suicide Sojourner works with its ambiguous existential anxiety, lending itself to a uneasy yet oddly beautiful directness thats hypnotic all the way through despite the heavy subject matter. Not a easy watch but a necessary one.
