“hello?”
“is this the cocksucker residence?”
“god damn you! stop calling here”
“is this four two one pussy way?”
“you bitch!”
“now let me check the zip code. two-one-two-fuck-you?”
“the police are tracing this call this very minute!”
“well, dottie hinkle, then why aren’t they here, huh, fuckface”
“FUCK YOU!”
“HAHAHAHAHAHA”
“DIDN’T I JUST SAY FUCK YOU?!”
“i beg your pardon?”
“who is this?”
“mrs. wilson from the telephone company. i understand you’ve had problems with an obscene phone caller?”
“yes, i am. i’m sorry, mrs. wilson. but this is driving me more crazy! i’ve had my number changed twice already. i’m a divorced woman, please help me.
“well, what exactly does this sick individual say to you?”
“i can’t say the words out loud, i don’t use bad language.”
“oh well, i know it’s difficult but we need to know the exact words”
“i’ll try. cocksucker, thats what she calls me.”
“LISTEN TO YOUR FILTHY MOUTH, YA FUCKING WHORE”
“GODDAMN YOU!”
“MOTHERFUCKER!”
“COCKSUCKER!”
delving deeper into john waters filmography, as one of his most acclaimed movies later into his career, switching from subversive trash like ‘pink flamingoes’ to more mature dark-comedy that aligns more with hollywood styles, but still having a massive edge that makes his stuff so amusing to watch in comparison to more mainstream, cliched comedies. ‘serial mom’ continues my streak of john waters movies receiving 4.5 stars, and i honestly think this is a truly smart comedy, and possibly one of his best. the dialogue is absurd and campy, with the phone scenes of kathleen turners mother character being a nuisance to one of her neighbours. the dialogue is sharp, funny and really doesn’t take itself seriously. kathleen turner is the heart of this movie, with her over-the-top performance as the seemingly sweet mother of two, to her colder side coming out as she submits to her murderous desires. besides being an excellent comedy, it’s also honestly ahead of its time. it showcases how much the public romanticises true crime, as the suffering of others is consumed like entertainment. the supporting cast is great: ricki lake, mink stole, matthew lillard. so many returnees from previous john waters films that i for some reason have nostalgia for, despite watching them months ago. it feels more polished that his earlier extreme cult classics, but still having that twisted edge that makes john waters john waters. it also perfectly subverts suburban values, as beverly kills for bad manners, rather than something actually severe. john waters should really venture into horror more, as i loved what he did here. also just love the blood feast references (even if i don’t love that movie)
