Now, about the message it tries to convey. One wrongful death doesn’t necessarily mean the death penalty itself doesn’t work. Personally, I’m not against it, and I have a few reasons.

technology is constantly improving, and we can identify criminals much more efficiently now. That lowers the chances of mistakes. Also, if people know the consequences are extreme, they might think twice doing something horrible. the death penalty has been a part of many and many justice systems.
