Eleanor "Nell" Vance: You have trouble with commitment?”
Theo: “Well, my boyfriend thinks so, my girlfriend doesn't. We could all live together, but they hate each other.”
Similar to my watch of the Scream movies we decided that because we had such a great experience watching these before Scary Movie 1 we watched this in preparation for Scary Movie 2.
I can’t compare this to the original at all and I won’t even try but from reading some reviews people aren’t happy about this so take this with a grain of salt in the sense I don’t know anything about the original.
Firstly outside of the 2 star rating there sure were some things to like here, I want to start off with the production design it was simply beautiful, the establishing shots outside and also the shots inside the house was very well done every scene looked very real and eerie without being too over the top for the most part.
I must add a few more things that were superb and that was the special effects, in the end they get overdone but I was really surprised this came out in 1999 they really have stood the test of time and I dare say were stupidly before their time here I was really impressed.
To pair with the following above the cinematography was very well done, nothing too crazy or ground breaking but it sure played its role and didn’t downplay how nice the production design and special effects were.
Finally for as far as good goes I thought the cast was very good, let me get to the acting in a moment but the cast as a whole was great we had Owen Wilson, Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lilli Taylor and Bruce Dern absolutely stacked. Look some of the acting was quite solid I thought Lilli Taylor was among the best here but I did also find it uneven at the same time. I thought that Owen Wilson and Catherine Zeta Jones played their roles well respectively as the comedic relief and the good looking lady to attract some of the men in etc. Liam Neeson was solid in areas but he seemed really out of it and maybe even frustrated there was one scene In particular you could see how good he was but he and the rest of the cast were unable to flex their muscle at all due to the script.
Speaking of script the film really falls apart about a third or half way through it just becomes a bit of a mess and there a plot holes everywhere I don’t even know where to start. The setup and the first disturbance in the film was quite good it follows with nothing left to the imagination.
Yes the special effects were good but now we aren’t imagining what there is or what to be scared of in this house we see it all which I think just loses all of its charm and scare factor behind it all.
There really isn’t much to go on about here the pacing is all out of whack and the film just doesn’t become enjoyable or ropes you in like it had the cast, sets and ability to.
Look I’m sure I’ll appreciate the watch when I see Scary Movie 2 but this film just isn’t very good as I said above it has great aspects and the recipe for what could’ve been but it just goes over the top and gets overblown whilst having little to no structure and treats the viewers as dumb and everything needs to be seen or heard nothing to thing about and becomes a classic horror trope movie.
