My second Kurosawa film. I am not familiar with the story of King Lear, so I’m sure some scenes in this movie were lost on me. However, I still found it to be an artistic masterpiece. The good parts of this were better than anything in “Seven Samurai”, but the rest of it was slightly more dull. The entire battle sequence depicting the defeat of Hidetora left my jaw on the floor. I loved the use of color in this, with each brother and their armies being so visually divided. Even the dialogue scenes were captivating, and I was obviously reading subtitles the whole time because I don’t speak a word of Japanese. This probably makes me sound like a child, but I wish that there had been a third big battle scene just because the two that played out in the film were done so well. There were heavy messages on the dangers of vengeance, zeal, jealousy, and pride. Overall, I’d say this is tied in my mind with Seven Samurai.
