this is Christopher Nolan’s debut, and considering the budget was only $6000, it’s actually a surprisingly good movie. this’ll definitely be my least favourite Nolan movie, but that’s not because it’s bad - all of his other movies are just way better. Nolan is known for his non-linear narratives, and we can definitely see the start of his signature style shining through, even in his first project. the plot is pretty basic, and there weren’t really any standout scenes, but there are a few good twists in there which really help to bring the film together.
it’s quite clearly a “student film”, especially with all the unknown actors, but you can still see it’s the start of what has made him one of the greatest directors of our time. all of the characters were pretty boring, and i didn’t bother growing a liking to any of them. i’m not a huge fan of black-and-white movies, but considering all the challenges he had to go through to make this film possible, i ended up respecting it a lot more than i thought i would. if this movie wasn’t made by Nolan, i’m sure it wouldn’t have as high of a rating as it does, but at least it’s only up from here!
