This is just one of those things in life you know will always be there for you
It really taps into that space for me that’s like the best of the best surely
Surely art doesn’t get better than that
When it just hits that spot just right
And with this, every time I watch it I find this weird hope that I could actually put that feeling into words, and most times I try
That feeling of how it really does just work for me
I do just absolutely love it
Of my favourite films, this is the one i stand the best shot with I feel like
The others are too emotionally intertwined, but here is the goldilock’s zone
So I mean I’m just gna babble until I’ve run my mouth off to Mars and back
First off, this is Kurosawa at his best
Actually Jesus strike me down if I speak a word of a lie
I’d say it’s my favourite kurosawa, whether it’s his actual best is a fun debate, but working at his best?? Yeah man this is fucking it
First off the edit is refined to perfection
You could slice diamonds like hot dogs with how sharp this feels
Those first four shots ltr jump out of the screen and throw you in a room with nine strangers, or ten
It’s breezed through and jumps like Rashomon, never leaving the audience behind
Always cutting on movement, or breaking that flow for more dramatic effect
And each shot is endlessly analysable
Blocking ? On par with High and Low, and manages to feel less staged and theatrical
Instead it’s more natural and almost like pieces falling into place rather than watching a mosaic get filled in (still awesome tho)
Music ? Feels reminiscent of Red Beard to me with its holiness having the same lift and its gloominess having the same well gloom I suppose
Performances ? Boy oh boy you got Mifune at the peak of his 10 year peak and Nakadai with his perfected his evil little cunning fellow - its flawless
Background characters operate less as singular performances and move together (mainly the nine samurai) as a crowd, perfectly directing tension and emotion wherever it needs to go in the frame
Much like the peasants of Seven Samurai
The freaking narrative? BOY it’s a dam SEQUEL to one of the most influential films of the early 60s or dare I say all time ?!! It’s GOT to get you hyped man !!!! It twists and turns it’s funny and it’s intense but it’s always paced to perfection and just takes you along like a steady current in a peaceful river dude
It’s that good I don’t even feel like I’m exaggerating
It is like the sheath to Yojimbo’s blade, but it cuts just as well on its own too
But here’s the main thing for me, it feels so effortless
It feels like your seeing a guy almost so at the top of his game he’s just shitting pure 24 carats
Every in-frame decision or metaphor and any thematic element can be analysed as if it was so meticulously devised as it appears on the outside… but who’s to say ?
It feels just as plausible that it was just instinct
Obviously he had an amazing crew working under him, but the way Kurosawa operated he’s yessing or noing and suggesting left right and bliddy centre
All those decisions ?
All these results of those decisions were seeing and hearing on screen ?
Could they all demand the level of attention they seem to?
I don’t know I just don’t know
But to me, it seems so right that these things were sculpted by some intrinsic certainty of all these talented minds working under the ceo of film-making talent
He just knew man
Everything was so right I don’t even know if anyone could’ve known they were cooking so hard
Surely it just so could’ve played out that way
Look at any shot ltr any shot and tell me there isn’t some hidden metaphor in there
But one that’s so close to the surface it’s hard to deny it wasn’t subconsciously intentional
This feels like a crazy thing im saying
It’s like glazing so hard they could just get away with anything but hey
I have my fair share of Kurosawa dislikes to
I’m not always on this guys side
But Jesus this one just hits me right
Best viewing experience every time
The perfect ‘sit back and relax’ and also ‘but wait guys check this shit out. Hell yeah, think about that for a minute. Mmmhmm.’
I haven’t even spoken a WORD about anything all that specifically too
Esp the theme of violence like what the hell
It definitely takes a bit of a backseat, but it’s never so subtle that when it takes centre stage for that phenomenal ending it feels weird at all - it’s just right
Yet again, just utter breezing perfection
Also what the hell are ppl on abojt when they talk about how this is Kurosawa trying to appeal to western audiences ??
If you say that, I recommend feeling bad.
Like what ? As if that wouldn’t be on everybody’s minds since Rashomon? In what way does this appeal that Seven Samurai doesn’t? Mmmm???
Also if any of yous hit up a quick google or something Alex Cox or some other saint can hopefully quote Kurosawa himself rejecting those claims for you
Please stop saying those words in that order
Maybe I’m wrong about some of this for someone who’s read this
Hey man maybe I’m just wrong about something in general
But holy fuck am I sure I’m right to me
Ig the last thing is I just like this
I like the tempo I like the story I like the way it looks
I can so see how ppl wouldn’t like this
It’s so clear how it may just not click or someone might just find it annoying
That makes sense I think
But I can’t see how anyone could deny its refinement and pristine design
I do think its that good
It’s that undeniable
And it’s exciting to think abojt where that perfection came from
Whether it’s as methodical and pedantic as it appears on the surface
Or whether it’s born of a sequence of effortless, instinctive choices of an ensemble at the pinnacle of their craft
Either way, it proves what humans are capable of creating for each other and how amazingly epic to have that packaged up forever
