im not really sure what rating to give for this yet
this film is like made to be a tearjerker, a slam dunk of an emotional blanket to smother you in and wipe up your tears when necessary, but it feels like toda akihiro made the conscious decision to play scenes, even the most heartwrenching ones in theory, straight
im an absolute crybaby, i cry at anything even emotional-adjacent, i usually can't see anything out of my glasses for two-thirds of a tearjerker, but i didnt cry during this film, and i think it's one of the pieces of this film i really enjoyed
carefully strafing away from melodrama and exploitation, ichiko manages to cover some heavy topics and show some gut wrenching scenes without the viewer feeling emotionally manipulated, by in large.
a rather quiet film about awful stuff, and it really works i think
