I was a pretty disappointed with this one, I really was expecting more from it. It had some truly good parts and I will say it’s the first time where Robert De Niro isn’t an Italian mob boss or something like that so at least he expanded his acting horizons. I felt like the movie was very slow and not great when it came to showing the horrors of war, like the war parts definitely needed more screen time. The roulette parts were great though especially the POW one. I also felt like it’s a bit dumb the way they portrayed PTSD, they made it where it was very cliche. It’s an alright film just really not the greatest, I don’t need to rewatch but might anyways.

OMG, what a movie.

At the beginning, it really made me want to go to a wedding, and by the end, it really made me want to kill myself.

This is definitely a minor masterpiece. A story so meticulously crafted into three hours that just fly by. I had so much fun in the first hour, felt very uncomfortable in the second, and experienced so much anguish in the third.

Already a classic, and one of the best anti-war films out there.

This is the second time in a row I’ve watched a movie on a whim without knowing anything about it only for it to be a harrowing account of the Vietnam war 😭 Apocalypse Now comparisons incoming!

Apocalypse Now is probably the opposite of this movie. It is stylized, story-driven, and gives a strong narrative to everything that happens. The Deer Hunter feels committed to showing things as they happened at the pace they happened with little in the way of overarching narrative for the viewer to walk away with. I found myself reflecting more on he real life experiences of those who fought in the Vietnam War than on the characters themselves. I didn’t understand the characters at all, their motivations, or how those motivations changed over time. Some parts were just SO slow or straight up random. This all seems to be a deliberate choice but it just didn’t work for me. Even Meryl Streep couldn’t make me understand or really feel for Linda & that’s saying something.

Side note but it’s absolutely baffling to me that they filmed the deer hunting scenes in Washington. Anyone from the east coast can tell that those mountains aren’t anywhere near Pittsburgh 😭
