I watched this movie without knowing anything about the Irish group 'Kneecap' or the challenges of preserving the Irish language, but I can confidently say that I absolutely LOVED it. The first time I came across this film, it was one of my recommendations on Netflix. I read the plot summary, and it didn't seem all that interesting to me. I'm so glad I eventually revisited my recommended list and decided to watch it.
Honestly, it only took a couple of minutes into the film for me to realize I was going to love it. It's a musical comedy with a mix of dark humor that I find very intriguing. Beyond the story and the music, which I honestly did not expect to enjoy as much as I did (The Beats Were Insane 🔥), I loved the cinematography, cast, drug scenes with their wacky and weird effects, text overlay for the rap scenes, and the cool camera transitions throughout the movie. My favorite scene was when the radio host asked them to send their songs to the station while they were on drugs, and the scene quickly transitioned from reality to clay animation. It was so random, but it worked perfectly.
Overall, I really really enjoyed this! I was also surprised to learn that they played themselves. They’re all actually great actors in their roles, especially the teacher/DJ—I honestly thought he was a professional actor. ‘Kneecap’ was a blast, definitely one of my top movies of 2024!
