this film is soooo funny. and on a technical level, it is very very very impressive. the camerawork, the editing, the lighting, the music, and basically everything else is top tier. if you like movies about movies, this is a must watch. Leslie Cheung is one of the most popular Hong Kong actors for a reason and he is really perfect in this role. and this is the first time i've seen Shu Qi in a role that is not super serious. she has so many great moments here and shows great range. her comedic timing is on point and her character's arc is well executed.

i love how self aware this film is. the meta-commentary about artistic integrity, commercialization of art, and audience expectations is fantastic. the dialogue between the artist, the viewer, and the studio is so cleverly portrayed. the film almost functions as a self parody, and it is absolutely hilarious. the references to other films are sooo funny and help further contextualize the themes with respect to the wider film industry.

this film made me realize that we need more pornos shot like Chungking Express. so much lost potential...

the porn parody of A Chinese Ghost Story was not something i was expecting but i haven't laughed that hard in a while. it's even funnier when you realize Leslie Cheung plays the lead in the original lmaoo. there were honestly so many moments in this film that got me straight up losing my shit. that Clockwork Orange scene bruhh.... 💀

seeing that one guy with the Taxi Driver t-shirt made me wonder what Travis Bickle and Cybill Shepherd would think of the 90s Hong Kong porn industry. i feel like that first date would have gone so much better.

Viva Erotica follows Sing, a director with two flops under his belt, as he is signed on to do an adult film. The world of Category III film is already not a world that he wanted to be a part of, and yet, because he can’t help but make film, agrees. There on out he is given an incredibly difficult film from an intensely micromanaging producer who jumps at whatever chance he can to direct others and an actress who refuses to do nudity despite being in an adult film. The film has great energy throughout, with some very nice comedy and some wonderful acting from Chung as Sing. The scrappy can-do attitude of the in-universe film crew carries over into how it presents the day-to-day and slowly peels the layers behind the lives of those working on it.
