❝When you don't like yourself... you tend to dislike everything connected to you. New things seem to be more attractive. When you learn to love yourself, then the same old life starts looking new... starts looking nice. Thank you for teaching me how to love myself! Thank you for making me feel good about myself.❞

English Vinglish fills me simultaneously with joy and indescribable rage. Joy because Shashi prospers and finds her chosen family, and rage because her shit husband and shit blood family treat her horribly despite her efforts. She should've ended up with Laurent, who actually saw and listened to and loved her, instead of her stupid ungrateful husband. Sridevi really was a force to be reckoned with, and her performance in this film is undoubtedly the heart and soul. I've seen a lot of people saying she was the 'Meryl Streep of India', and while I adore Meryl I think Sridevi's in a league of her own; the rest of the cast are also very good, especially Adil Hussain. Overall, a very nostalgic film for me, and one I come to frequently.
