An effective drama of a young couple struggling with poverty during the depression, that just so happens to be set in Germany right before Hitler came to power. The themes on the surface are still very relevant to the present and rather optimistic at the end of the day, but the unintentional subtext that history presents really just elevates this to an uncomfortable and astonishing degree. I watched this mainly for Margaret Sullavan, who is fantastic as always, but I must add how oddly affecting Douglass Montgomery's performances is. He's the type of actor of this period who would probably just be described as a bland pretty face and a bit wooden and emotionally distant, but he really works here because he just emanates this kind of broken innocence that was really just impactful. One to seek out.
