I’ve been meaning to watch this movie because my boyfriend loves this movie and finds it hilarious, so I decided to watch it.
This movie screams 2000s. From the shitty CGI editing of the baby in the beginning and the cow during that one fight scene, and of course that fight had to have a parody of The Matrix. And there’s some gross out humor and sexual jokes too. They honestly didn’t bother me because that’s exactly what I expected from a 2000s comedy movie. I could live without the fight scene with the cow though, because just seeing milk being squirted grossed me out. In fact, I’d like to believe that this entire fight scene inspired his later film, Barnyard. I also do feel a little bit skeeved seeing The Chosen One’s tongue have a face, and it gave me flashbacks to The Annoying Orange. Nevertheless, I still found this movie funny and laughed a lot while I was watching it. It has that 2000s silliness that I enjoy.
Even though this movie is definitely a product of its time, I am fascinated that the director was about taking an old martial arts movie and making it into something else. I can only imagine the amount of time and money it took for one person to re-dub the entire movie. I also found them showing how they bluescreened themselves into the movie a nice touch as well. It makes me miss when movies would show the behind the scenes stuff during the credits.
This movie definitely isn’t the best but I still found it funny and respect the amount of work Steve Oerderker put into making it. I can definitely see why other people would call it a shitty movie but I enjoyed it overall and would probably rewatch it in the future. This is definitely just a guy fucking around with an old martial arts movie and having fun with it. I am curious to watch the original movie that the director used to see how different the story is.
