When I first saw the poster for worldbreaker. I saw Milla Jovovich and Luke Evans with monsters in the background. My brain thought ok another fun apocalyptic movie with Milla fighting monsters. I thought why read the plot when the poster looks like that. Well it's not that at all and something more reminiscent to a quiet place. Which isn't bad and the performances are quite good. The point is even if I do like the movie. Dont tease me with a so bad it's good Milla post apocalyptic movie and not give it to me.
Slightly overlong intro aside Worldbreaker does bring something to the table instead of being another movie like a quiet place. Does it break any molds absolutely not but it brings two great leads with Luke Evans and Billie Boullet.
Those two are the highlight especially how it shows their father and daughter relationship. They kept Me engaged all the way through. The ending is quite sweet too if just a little abrupt.
The story is not an action movie where they fight monsters. The story does being some good dramatic moments though especially as we follow our leads. I also liked the motif of telling stories to keep up the hope. The stories might not have Been true but I think it gives a sense of world building. Again it's not a new story and you can think of better movies that tell it but when it's done well its done well.
The locations are beautiful too. The island and the cave. It just looks great and brings life to the movie.
Let's talk about the monsters. Firstly, they don't look great effects wise. That being said I do like their lore. Coming from another dimension, why only woman can mostly fight them and the world building elements told to us in the stories. I think the hybrids looks cool. The real big monsters are fine. They look acceptable to me but could be more memorable.
Luke and Billie may bring the talent but what about Milla. I love Milla in these roles. Is she typecast definitely but I'll never complain about a new one. So what about her in this movie. Well much like nic cage in Arcadian who gets injured halfway throug and only comes back in the ending.
She is there. I like the scenes she's in but she could have been played by someone else. Her character on paper is cool but even if I know it's not her movie. Show don't tell remains a rule, so show me she's this badass warrior. She is also in the movie for 20 minutes so that was disappointing.
So worldbreaker in a mixed bag. On the one hand the story with the father and daughter keep you engaged. The monsters lore is cool. The scenes in the cave with Rosie is sweet. It also doesn't have great monster effects. A waste of Milla and an abrupt ending.
So in the end I'll say I did like it overall. I was a little thrown back when I realized what this movie was but it drew me back in. Despite its flaws I had a good time with worldbreaker.
