Came for bit part Dan Aykroyd, stayed for drug addicted, jealous, and bisexual Matt DamonThis movie stands out from other musician biopics because of how it focuses solely on a singular aspect of somebody's life rather than the overarching story of their career. A good portion of the biopics I liked follow this, and Steven Soderbergh made an entertaining, well-laid-out, and incredibly acted movie.
This movie follows the tumultuous relationship between Liberace and his younger partner, Scott Thorson. Movies about couples with large age gaps can easily fall off, but this movie acknowledges how troublesome their relationship is. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, as the leads, both deliver stellar performances, and the supporting cast, including Dan Aykroyd, Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, and Debbie Reynolds, deliver memorable performances.
Soderbergh's direction is good, but nothing spectacular; the dialogue was quite strong. The costumes, makeup, and sets brought me into this world, and deserved all of the Primetime Emmys it received. Parts of the pacing didn't work for me, but the structure was strong enough to elicit the intended emotions. It's quite a strong movie; I would highly recommend it, especially since it stands apart from other biopics for being good.
