Once I reprogrammed my brain for this classic style of film and acting, as well as watching it in Spanish with no closed captions, I had a great time with Dos Tipos de Cuidado. Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante are great as best friends, Jorge Bueno y Pedro Malo, who have a massive falling out over a girl. My favorite scene was the sing-off/rap battle at the wedding! But I also found it interesting from a cultural lens. The entire conflict in this film stems from Jorge Bueno’s inability to leave a pre-arranged date because his girlfriend told him to, and even gave him an ultimatum that she’d leave him if he went through with it - and then he gets jealous when his best friend dates and eventually marries her! Yes, Pedro Malo definitely broke bro-code but Jorge was also the cause of his own problems because of his insistent machismo or toxic masculinity. This comes back later when the two have made a pact to get the original partners they were after, even tho Pedro’s married to the woman Jorge wants (but it’s okay because Pedro and her aren’t really in love!). Pedro’s so determined that he’s even willing to get over the extreme cultural shame of being the cuckold - this the constant references to bulls and him getting horns. By the end, you think back to their conversation at the beginning of the movie and feel like they both played an insanely long game to get their respective girls.
However, there were also a couple moments that really didn’t age well. One scene in particular stood out in which a man drags an unwilling woman into the storage room where Pedro’s father-in-law is trapped to seemingly sexually assault, but of course this is played for laughs as the father-in-law finally escapes in a huff.
