Back when the only thing keeping Dragon Ball alive were the video games, and the Dragon Ball Heroes openings, but then this OVA pulled through with only 20mins and satisfied so many DBZ fans before they realise what the word “canon” means lmao.
Yeah this OVA does have issues:
- Continuity (Bardock and Frieza interacting in the beginning never happens in the Bardock special).
- Bardock going back in time through a Death Ball (literally could’ve said a line that his future vision powers had something to do with it).
- Bardock realising immediately that he’s in the past, but still thought that Chilled was Frieza (I think this is a slight nod that he might be a bit dumb like Goku lol).
- Bardock’s tail not being yellow.
- He naturally comes back with all of his armour still intact.
- Are those Tuffles, or another species that came before them??
- Why would the Cold Army recruit Saiyans when they were specifically told by their ancestor to fear them.
- I’m fine with it not being dubbed (even though it is stupid to not care about the Western market, Toei) but the only way to legally watch it is through Dragon Ball Z For Kinect. That’s just cruel.
But I do think that this OVA does need some commendation:
- Bardock’s bad side is still shown, but isn’t evil.
- Him turning into a Super Saiyan is actually cool because of how the Bardock special did tease his potential, and it’s ironic that Frieza wanted to get rid of him just for Bardock to actually be the cause of all his issues.
And this is how Super Saiyan Bardock became a thing in games. Still no Yamoshi origin story though.
