Instead of leaving an actual review, I will tell a story. When I saw that RATS! was going to be playing in a Massachusetts theater for the first time, AND that the directors would be present for an introduction and post-screening Q&A, I bought a ticket instantly. Upon arriving to the Somerville Theater, my friend and I discovered that instead of the film playing in any of the actual auditoriums, it would instead be shown in a screening room with a seat count of 31. I foolishly assumed that the seat count would mean that the screening wasn’t going to be as fun as I hoped - I liked RATS! when I watched it a year ago, but I knew that all it would take for me to love it would be a good audience experience, something that I assumed would never happen due to the film never getting a theatrical run in New England, this being the reason why I got the ticket in the first place.
However, all seats were filled, making for an experience that was a lot more intimate than initially expected. The directors announced that they were shooting a music video in Boston and decided to host the Massachusetts premier of RATS! while they were in town. The film was then projected onto the screen from a Blu-ray player that we had a lot of fun watching as they set up.
And then we watched RATS!. As first, I wasn’t sure whether the audience would vibe with RATS! as it felt like my friend and I were the only ones laughing during the first 15 minutes. But somewhere around the bathroom or rat scene, the rest of the audience started to vibe with it, and by the end of the movie there were vocal reactions coming from all around us. This was, quite possibly, one of the most fun theater experiences I’ve ever had and I’m so happy my unfair skepticism was instantly proven wrong.
And if anyone from the screening reads this, yes, I was one of the only two teenagers present in the screening and I apologize for the possibly annoying laughter that came from our general direction.
