❝Sometimes the story we tell ourselves becomes the truth.❞

Rental Family is such a tender and warm film, and adding Brendan Fraser into the mix is a guaranteed winning combination; I found myself smiling one second and on the verge of tears only a few seconds later. It examined how, in modern life, emotional needs sometimes go unmet, and the unconventional ways people use to seek connection. The rental company in the film sells emotions, but Phillip forms real bonds with the clients despite the artificial setups. I’d say the plot overall is formulaic; it’s the performances from the cast that really push it over the edge. Brendan, of course, was fantastic, and it’s such a pleasure to watch him in his element. Akira Emoto was also brilliant, and made a great comedic and emotional duo with Brendan - I enjoyed their segments the most in the film, but the entire cast was excellent. Add a restrained, observational visual style and naturalistic palettes into the mix and you have a terrific watching experience; I really enjoyed Rental Family and plan to watch it with my own family sometime.
