A film that really makes you contemplate documentary film and your ideas around the distinctions between it and narrative fiction. In visual style and storytelling techniques, Closure rejects so much of traditional documentary and adopts so much of traditional fiction to the point where need to remind yourself what you’re watching is real life. But when you’re constantly rejecting your instincts based on cinematic normalities, I began to ask myself if the filmmaker’s commitment to this unique style was hurting my immersion into the realities of the situation I was watching - arguably a core tenet or goal of documentary film. I also asked myself if utilizing cinematic technique for storytelling in documentary draws it further away from truth. Is creative license in this genre just built on trust between audience and author? When seeing into new worlds and being asked to accept it as true, we do place an enormous amount of trust in those authors as an audience. Are we willing to accept auteurs in non-fiction?
