Congrats on the effective trailer. You tricked me into thinking this might be a gritty, southern-fried crime/revenge flick with a bunch of shotgun blastin'. There's a little bit of that but unfortunately this is more in line with something I'm observing more and more with our terrible cultural climate. That's right. Dreary Americana. This is maudlin and melodramatic as all get out. Pinning things on some really great actors helps a ton but Place Beyond The Pines or Hell Or High Water this ain't. This isn't quite as bad as Sovereign and it's not a purely fantastic exercise. Rather, it's like a long episode of a show that's somewhere between Justified, Sons of Anarchy, and Yellowstone. Catch it on streaming on a lazy afternoon and you'll probably have a good time just don't go in expecting Cold In July or some shit.

Is it derivative? Sure. But it’s also very well acted and a great look at the vicious cycle of a man being a product of his own environment and being unable to escape his nature. He’s a rattlesnake.
