Dan Aykroyd dating an alien feels normal at this point.Believe it or not, an 80s movie called 'My Stepmother Is an Alien' is pretty fucking cheesy. The scenarios are pretty ridiculous, the music is bombastic, contains interspecies sex, and it has Dan Aykroyd as a scientist. There is plenty to latch onto from Kim Basinger's alien character, Aykroyd being pretty fun, and the pretty funny scenes that are littered throughout this cute little movie.
Unfortunately, the pacing doesn't do this movie any favors. With a title like that, you have a preconceived notion about what the plot would be, but most of the movie focuses on the relationship between Steve and Celeste, as opposed to Steve's daughter, Jessie. It would be like if 'My Girl' were about Harry and Shelley instead of Vada. They get married around an hour in, and the main conflict between Celeste and Jessie is solved quite quickly. The movie isn't satisfying, lessening its impact.
There are other parts that bog this movie down. Jon Lovitz's character is completely unbelievable despite their attempt to make him funny, and there are some weird woman-on-man sexually assault undertones that are presented for laughs.
It's not terrible, and humorous bit parts would have made great SNL sketches, but it doesn't add up to a good movie.
