i love john carpenter, but this film was one of the least compelling i’ve seen. it still has the hallmarks of his style - great atmosphere; a chilling, but simple score; an interesting concept; good cinematography - but i don’t think the sum of these parts add up to what carpenter is capable of. there were some surprise cast members i didnt expect (Mark Hamill, Christopher Reeves) which i enjoyed. overall if you like carpenter, you’ll likely enjoy the film, but again not his best.

Not my favorite carpenter but I love small town settings where things go wrong. Those white wigs were so ridiculous I couldn’t take them damn kids seriously.

Jesus Was a Cross Maker
Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. He had to fall off the edge completely at some point and this is it. Contains none of the things that make Carpenter special and feels like such an artistic retreat after the perfection of his previous film. I’ve never watched the original so I can’t even blame favouritism or a hatred of remakes for this score. I’m hoping Vampires is a step back up.
