could’ve been way crazy and out there and despite most of it being aligned with his real life, reading his wikipedia article is almost a more entertaining experience. i can’t imagine enjoying this if you’re not already familiar with his life and don’t have the benefit of “oh, we’re in missolonghi 1824 so he’s going to die” to assuage your restlessness. it’s not bad and it’s not boring, but byron never feels truly dangerous in this, even when he’s storming down the hallway with pistols in his hands. waiting for the day someone makes a movie that honors his messy, turbulent, wicked charm and does it without softening him around the edges. he’s dramatic here but not outrageous, and we need an outrageous byron. despite how insane his life was and how many boxes this checks off, that’s all it feels like: a movie of checking boxes.
