First things first, if either apartment used (Leo or Ava’s) as setting actually exist, are on the UWS, and are hitting the market anytime soon pls send me the StreetEasy.
I've been a fan of Jonah's work ever since my mother hyperfixated on EXmas, after which I fell in love with his short films circulating on tiktok etc.
Anyone who knows me at all knows that I have been madly in love with Nora Ephron, Rob Reiner, and When Harry Met Sally/You've Got Mail, since I was about 8 years old. Their ability to depict realistic friendships and relationships, and use of NYC, specifically the UWS as a character has always been umatched in my opinion. I quite literally live on the UWS now BECAUSE of Ephron and Reiner. My love for this neighborhood knows no bounds, and watching 31 Candles I could feel Jonah's same love for the city and the neighborhood radiate through the screen.
31 Candles had been on my list for a while and I was genuinley so sad I missed the initial run at the Quad Cinema, but was thrilled to hear it was picked up by AMC! Seeing it yesterday in a packed theatre was such a good reminder that romcoms dont have to be relics of pre-2010's, that we can still be creative and whimsical and rooted in yearning in 2026. The cast's chemistry was palpable, and specifically the shabbat scene, felt like an unscripted hangout between friends. The score was mesmerizing in the same vain as Harry Connick Jr’s work for When Harry Met Sally, or the infamous heart break of Justin Hurwitz’s La La Land score. Incredibly heartwarming example that turning 30 (or 31) isn't all that much different than turning 13.
