like others on here, i’m gonna say this really purely depicts a deep friendship and how it can be unchanged from the biggest of movements on either party’s side. it still would have worked just as well most likely without it being trans-centric, which leaves me wondering whether this should be considered as a great of trans media. nonetheless, i think it fs does a great job at illustrating all the nuances and politesse that might feel goes out the window in a newly founded trans relationship. but the two deal with it in the best way they know how with their respective legacies and superpowers in the comedic arts.
it also unfortunately leaves me questioning just how deep will ferrel is involved in this movement tho. i initially never would’ve taken him for an ally, let alone an activist. he just never seemed the type and that’s okay, but you then question whether he supports her because she’s trans or simply because she’s a friend. if he sees another trans person, is he gonna treat them the same? if he votes for someone, will he make sure they ensure equal rights and protection for trans people? i’m not sure. it very well could be the case. but the amount of times he would introduce her (maybe she’s meek and that’s ofc then the right thing to do, but each and every time proclaiming that she’s trans will never let her feel comfortable and be able to pass seamlessly) abruptly before she could have a chance and also some of his ignorance towards specific disasters in the movie were telling. granted it’s a rocky road for everyone and he probably is just making an effort like anyone else would and is bound to slip up.
also was great to see how much she was welcomed back into the community she had dedicated so much of herself to. it was so shocking to see what would resemble the facade of a completely comfortable man, only to have been living a lie for 50+ years and then have so many friends instantly comfort her must have been great. again this doc isn’t the best at dealing with the negative aspects, so we don’t know how many rejected her, but this shouldn’t be a case study. once again, just a buddy trip across america where one buddy happens to be trans.
in relation to that, the whole oklahoma situation was pretty unnerving as well. when you profess your support and allegiance to the trans community when the very same flags you bear on your walls want nothing to do with them and seek their very eradication. probably just wanted a reason to chum up with will. tbf it all was quickly redeemed by the native american performance. so quickly was the audience reminded that wherever one goes in america, they can always feel supported or at least slightly represented.
yes it’s been a long one, but finally that kristen wiig song was acc pretty good. thought she’d bail on the idea after two hours or something but that was insanely well produced for a couple days notice. after two years tho, i do want to know how harper is and whether she has found even more joy recently. hope she keeps everyone updated w a round two.
