Tonatiuh deserved a better film. He leads with such a breath of sincerity and life despite the story’s faint pulse. In focusing on the mediocrity of J-Lo’s other talents, how phenomenal she is as a dancer often gets put to a side. That said, after the 3rd musical sequence — I was over it.

None of the songs are memorable and whatever’s going on in that movie is not nearly as engaging as the queer love story unfolding in that prison. What an interesting case study to shine light on the true brilliance of Chicago, it wasn’t easy being her.

The sets, the costumes, the dancing, the dramaaaaa, and the political commentary?? If Guillermo del Toro ever did another remake of this I have no doubt it would be exceptional. But this one was also, SO. GOOD.
