I saw the premise, the cast and the poster of Al Pacino posing like James Bond, and I was thinking “pleaaaase be good.” It surpassed my expectations and was exactly what I was looking for on my quest for quintessentiallly glossy 80s/90s thrillers. An unlucky in love detective who has to go on dates to find the killer? Forget it - what a conceit. And the way it moves is so effortless. Pacino and Ellen Barkin are hot together, and their dialogue is nothing less than natural. It also has this sultry air with the cinematography and music that’s intoxicating, making you nostalgic for a long-gone cinematic era. Some people may find that the way the plot eventually unravels is unsatisfying, but in the meantime you get to spend 2 hours with these great characters.
