I saw this movie years and years ago and found it quite charming. I revisited as part of my Peter Weir Blank Check Watchalong and I still find it quite charming.
The movie doesn’t totally work mostly because MacDowell and Depardieu are the wrong kind of mismatch and the story never really leaves earth. The show stopping dinner party sequence is the fulcrum the movie hinges on, but it needs one or two more big scenes. It’s not romantic enough to cancel make up for the comedy, and there’s not enough comedy to make up for the romance. Bebe Neuwirth steals the show and is so hot.
Nevertheless I like the premise a lot and I always thought it was ripe for a gender swapped remake with a high strung guy and a manic pixie dream girl.
