there is no reason on planet earth for this movie to be 3 hours long. the issue with interesting source material as shown here is that writers think that you need to put every single aspect of them into the story when in reality you just need the cool bits.
i did enjoy kevin costner as wyatt earp whilst no as good as kurt russell he does have a more grounded feel and that of a man who has lived through a lot of a shit. didn’t love our doc holliday here seemed more like an asshole who was constantly having to be watched to not do something stupid then a crusader helping out his friend before he died.
this movies one real problem is that it just had too many characters come and go without any real consequences. the only characters that mattered were the family and the people who killed them. but for some reason we meet a million cowboys and randos who are in lots of scenes then just seemingly disappear. they made it tough for the audience to follow along and if you’re gonna make a 3 hour movie to can’t be that slowly paced

i may have been less harsh on this movie/enjoyed it more had i not seen tombstone first (which feels superior in every way) but we’ll never know!
kevin costner’s wyatt earp is SO unlikable which may be more historically accurate (idk i never met wyatt earp) but it is also way less fun to watch. half the time he’s a jerk and the other half he’s a bag of rice (boring).
doc holliday is barely in it and the short time he is on screen i was just sad that it wasn’t val kilmer. dennis quaid is alright but doesn’t come close to whatever val had going on in tombstone.
i did like how this included more of wyatt’s history and the earp family dynamics. it was a solid western for sure, but it’s also impossible to not compare it to tombstone and if you do that… you may be disappointed.
