I changed my mind. This is the best Lord of the Rings movie by a good margin, I used to think it was the two towers but it’s not, don’t get me wrong they are both phenomenal but this one in my mind edged out the two towers when before I used to think the two towers was better. I will admit I still think the battle of helms deep is the best battle sequence in the series but I do see the return of the king as a better overall film now. I’m gonna start with the bad first though. #1. The two major uses of cheap cop outs, the ghosts and the eagles both piss me off. #2 how did Frodo get stabbed by shelob through his mithril chainmail, hmmmm? #3 Sam got totally scammed in this whole ordeal. He did basically everything Sam did including carrying the ring and Frodo with the ring at times but no he didn’t get to go with his friend to paradise, instead he got a wife and kids, he was so cheated. That always irked me, Mary and pippen didn’t deserve to go but Sam did, instead they left him crying on a dock.
Ok, now the good, besides the Sam thing, I really do love the ending. I love the bittersweet nature of it. There’s very few movies that make me sit in my chair after the credits start rolling but this is one that makes me do that every time. I love the the first time I watched this, I watched it with my grandfather who is very close to me so every time I watch this I always think of him, it makes a just that much more powerful. I also do believe this is the first ending to a movie I ever cried during because it’s just that good, call me a wimp, I don’t care. The action scenes are intense and intricate. The characters are amazing as usual. I really is a perfect movie besides those little nitpicks mentioned above. I do believe it is one of the most beautifully made, shot, composed and constructed movies of all time and with all of that perfection it made this, which to me is considered art. Art at its purest.
