Nowhere near the epic of the original Mabuse, though closer in form and tone to M even if it's not as successful. I wish there was more early sound German films Lang could've done, his craft between this and M is such at a fascinating place artistically. But y'know, fucking Nazis. It's also hilarious to me that this is technically a sequel to M too because Inspector Lohmann just happens to be main character here. Otto Wernicke is the best part of the film, again I wish there were like five more Inspector Lohmann movies.

Ironically the first film had a tighter pacing, but the greatness maintains. The sound design is fantastic, and very deliberate in what’s playing, this allows to build tension amazingly and also gives us some of the best transitions in cinema history, while making everything feel a lot more depressing, uncanny and sinister (the lack of extras compared to how massive and extravagant the first one was scale-wise also helps with this), yet there are some genuinely hilarious moments, and it’s strangely hopeful.
