Giving this 4.5/5 stars even though the extended version I saw in theaters Saturday was a solid 4/5 for benefit of the doubt since the only gripe I had was the pacing & length. Which was unfortunately a pretty major issue for me that affected my enjoyment at a certain point. This very much so did not need to be 3 1/2 hours.
Though I feel like if I watched the original, 1/2 hours shorter version of this classic Bollywood gem, I'd very much consider this a certified 5-star club member.
Regardless, this was one of the most impressive western action epics I've ever seen. And I hate westerns. The fact that this was also the director's debut film at 23 makes it one of the most impressive feats of filmmaking talent in film history.
If you're still on the fence about Bollywood filmmaking, this will shatter any cliche preconceptions you have.
It wasn't just with RRR that Indian cinema was making blockbusters that could compete in filmmaking quality & entertainment value as anything you find in Hollywood. It started here with Sholay. Though I'm still not sure I know what Sholay means.
