I still retain that it is a farce, but a brilliant one. The way Fassbinder makes fun of and spits on every part of our society...its truly cynical fun. But its also deftly handled, he illustrates so many different power relationships in our modern world. Specifically, he illustrates how all our conceptions of power are more akin to a game than we might think. The only people in this movie who are free from the fucked up (but inherent) power games are the spaced out drug addict and Edgar's mom (who is clearly in a completely different reality). I don't think that Fassbinder is necessarily suggesting the only way out of our prison is death, but its certainly all we've got.
