amazing musical. insanely good music that tells the story but is also so listenable outside of the story. such deep and unvisited themes are seen in this movie (at least to me) and it’s just so good.
the story is so well constructed and it being able to be told on a single set stage that’s literally just a kitchen shows how insanely talented the cast is and how brilliant the writing is.
now the music is a whole different conversation some people wont be able to appriciate this masterpiece because they arent musical people but thats just sad to me. the way a song can convey a story is incredible because it does so on so many different levels. through words, chord pogressions, reoccuring melodies, keys and shifts in tone and tempo, all of these things can convey meaning in a way that words just simply cant. this arises a huge appreciation for the actors and how much they put into a show and story.
spoilers may be included:
the twist of Gabe being dead and his name being withheld until the end of the musical is so meaningful. i watched the pro shot for the first time with my girlfriend who is not usually a musical watcher (although she loves hamilton as she should) and i knew the story slightly as well as some of the songs so the twist wasn’t a shock to me but i heard an audible gasp from her during the birthday scene.
one example of this story telling is in the song “Superboy and The Invisible Girl” the song is Natalie’s song and she starts and sings almost all of it until the end when Gabe comes in and it becomes a duet BUT he steals the melody of the song meaning he sings the main vocal part that Natalie was singing for the rest of the song which is not normal and it forced Natalie to sing a higher harmony on what was originally her own song. this is a parallel to the rest of the show and kind of just Natalie’s life. she feels forgotten and overlooked because her parents leave her in the shadow of her brother who’s been dead for 17 years and this is conveyed through the song.
